Mottice, Peter 1772-1855

From the Ohio Repository (now Canton Repository), June 1855:

"DIED: At his residence in Sandy Township, Stark County on the 7th of June 1855, Peter Mottice, Esq., another of the good old pioneer settlers, aged 83 years 4 months and 21 days, leaving 4 sons to mourn his loss.

"He was born in Morris County, NJ in 1772; removed to Washington Co., PA, thence to Jefferson Co. OH in 1802, and to Stark Co. in 1807. Was elected as one of the first jurors in the county – but one other of that jury is living in the county. He was a Justice of the Peace for many years – and County Commissioner. In all these positions he acquitted himself to the satisfaction of all.

"He became a member of the Presbyterian Church in 1818, was a Ruling Elder, and until his death labored faithfully for his Master. Indeed it was remarked by an aged Lady neighbor that she never heard or saw of Peter Mottice being excited or angry. During a long period he suffered much but was never heard to complain or murmur – bearing all with patience and resignation to the will of his God.

"So lived and died one of the few remaining pioneers of Stark County."
