Marie (Surbey) Mottice
93, of North Canton, died Jan. 2, 2012. She was born Sept. 9, 1918 in Canton to the late Lester and Grace Baum.
She was a 1936 graduate of McKinley High School and Canton Actual Business College. Marie and her first husband, Martin O. Surbey, were married in 1946. After earning her real estate license and broker's license, Marie became a trailblazer for the couple's joint business venture, the Martin O. Surbey Agency on Main Street in North Canton. They worked side by side until Martin's death in 1962 when the business was sold to the DeHoff's. In 1966, Marie married Merle Mottice, co-owner of Casper and Mottice Floor Coverings. Known for her outgoing personality, she began her own version of "Welcome Wagon" and the North Canton Friendly Hostess was born. For 23 years, Marie welcomed new residences to the area and founded the North Canton Newcomers Club and later the North Canton Gravel Club. She was past district president of the Federation of Women's Clubs. After moving to Florida, Marie was employed by the Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce and served as president of the Lakeworth, Fla. Women's Club and the Coterie Club of Palm Beach. She served more than nine years as an advisor for the Junior Women's Club of Lakeworth and was a member of the Brookville Women's Club. Shortly after her husband's death in 1995, Marie returned to North Canton and continued her busy life. She was a member of William H. Hoover Chapter of Eastern Star, Friends of the North Canton Library and the Lions Club. Marie was a lifetime member of the North Canton Playhouse and the McKinley High School Alumni Association. From 1995-2004, Marie used her community ties as a membership representative for the North Canton Chamber of Commerce. She was passionate about reading and playing bridge.
Marie was preceded in death by her first husband, Martin O. Surbey and her second husband, Merle Mottice. She is survived by cousin, Mrs. Gottfried (Ruth Lehman) and brother-in-law, Wayne (Marilyn) Surbey of Tustin, Calif. and stepdaughter, Susan Mottice Humphreys of Park City, Utah. She is also survived by nephews, Bob (Marlene) Mottice of Stow, Ohio, Jim (Barb) Mottice of Medina, Ohio, Charles (Barb) Kiko of North Canton, Dale (Lisa) Surbey of Houston, Texas and Paul Dean Surbey of Atlanta, Ga.; nieces, Patricia (Henry) Schwerzler of North Canton, Geraldine (Gary) Lautzenheiser of Sparta, Tenn., Kathryn (Fred) Dunn of Rochester Hills, Mich., Mary (Charles) Stanley of Hartville, Rebecca (Rick) Boggs of Cedar Springs, Mich., Carol (John) Gilbert of Orange, Calif., Beth (Jack) Circle of Tulsa, Okla. and Janice (Mike) Cook of Moro Beach, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2012, at the Reed Funeral Home North Canton Chapel with Pastor Eli Klingensmith officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to the time of services. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to Zion United Church of Christ, North Canton.
