Jabez Elliott, Sr., great-grandfather of Bernard Elliott, married Elizabeth Wigner on Dec. 9 1807 in Harrison Co., Virginia. This area is now part of West Virginia, and is the county in which Clarksburg is located. The marriage bond was executed on Dec. 5, and indicates that Elizabeth's father was Daniel Wigner. The two documents are from the archives of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, Vital Research Records. Jabez Elliott, Sr. is buried in the Ayres cemetery in Smithville, WV. According to an article by Edna Elliott Schartiger in a Calhoun Co. historical chronicle, his wife, Elizabeth Wigner, is also buried there but I have not been able to identify her grave. |

Jabez Elliott, Sr. and his wife Elizabeth Wigner raised 9 children in what was then the northwestern part of Virginia. They evidently began their family near what is now Weston, WV and later moved to the Smithville, WV area where he is buried. Here are their family facts: |

Jabez Elliott, Sr. was the father of Jabez, Jr., and the great-grandfather of Bernard Elliott. He fought in the War of 1812 and several Indian wars. The following is an excerpt of an article about Jabez, Sr. written by Edna Elliott Schartiger. The full article is entitled "The Jasper Elliott Family" and appeared in a Calhoun County historical chronicle: "My great grandfather was Jabez Elliott, Sr. who came from Ireland and served as a Private in the War of 1812, in John Bozarth's Company of Infantry, Fifth Regiment, Ritchie County, Virginia Militia. |
