B.V. Elliott Family History

Bernard V. Elliott Family Home Page

This is the starting place for information on the Bernard Elliott family and his ancestors. Primary site links are on the far left of this page, and sub-links may be found beside them (on their immediate right) on some pages.

The site is laid out so that you can find an item via multiple paths. For example, some content may overlap between the "Documents" category and the "Photos" category.

The "Photos" category is for generally for pictures that have a narrative attached, but there are many more photos in the "Galleries" section. Be sure to check them out.

Lastly, make use of the "search" box at the right side of these pages. You will be able to search the "Galleries" section, too, by checking the appropriate tab that appears while searching.

  • Millie Elliott's genealogy of John A. Elliott

Millie Elliott, 1891-1976, was the sister of Bernard Elliott and son of John A. and Arminda Elliott.

This handwritten genealogy, in the possession of Eula Elliott, Millie's niece, is one of the only surviving examples of her handwriting that I am aware of. In it she documents her father's and mother's immediate families. This includes John A.'s brothers and sisters and his mother and father, as well as Arminda's brothers and sisters and her parents.

  • Watson Elliott's Race Horses

Watson Elliot, 1881-1976, was Bernard Elliott's older brother. He was affectionately known as "Uncle Watt," and was generous with his money. Nieces and nephews, as well as grand-nieces and grand-nephews can remember his frequent cash gifts.

  • Jabez Elliott -- Elizabeth Wigner marriage

Jabez Elliott, Sr., great-grandfather of Bernard Elliott, married Elizabeth Wigner on Dec. 9 1807 in Harrison Co., Virginia. This area is now part of West Virginia, and is the county in which Clarksburg is located. The marriage bond was executed on Dec. 5, and indicates that Elizabeth's father was Daniel Wigner.

  • Reip Genealogy

The Reip family is related to the Elliott family by way of Goldie Reip who married Bernard Elliott. We have quite a lot of information about the Reips, largely from the work of Luverne Hanger who was a 1st cousin of Goldie Reip.

  • Goldie Reip obituary

From the Calhoun County Chronicle, December 22, 1938

Goldie Reip Elliott, daughter of Frank A. and Victoria Reip, was born July 30, 1905, and died December 16, 1938, and the age of 33 years, 5 months and 126 days.

  • Sycamore in the eyes of Maxine Elliott Mottice

    "Sycamore . . .
Whenever the weather was bad and the unpaved road even worse, Dad packed all 4 of us in the car and we took the ridge road.

"At a certain point we pulled into a country lane, Dad parked the car and we gathered our belongings and hiked down the hollow along the creek to Sycamore -- no matter the weather!

"Sycamore was our father's ancestral home -- the big white house along Sycamore Creek with a long porch spanning the entire front of the house.

  • Reip Cemetery

The Reip cemetery sits atop a wooded hill overlooking the old Reip farm near Euclid, WV. It is a small cemetery containing only 2 generations of Reips -- Frank, father of Goldie Reip Elliott, and his father Peter, and their wives.

  • Old Reip Farm

The old Reip farm was the home of Goldie Reip Elliott. Built, according to family recollection, by either Goldie's father Frank Reip or grandfather Peter Reip, it was in an area south of Grantsville, WV known as "up on the West Fork." The West Fork (of the Kanawha River, I believe) passes through an area in southern Calhoun County along Rt. 16.

  • Jabez Elliott, Sr. gravesite

Jabez Elliott, Sr. is buried in the Ayres cemetery in Smithville, WV. According to an article by Edna Elliott Schartiger in a Calhoun Co. historical chronicle, his wife, Elizabeth Wigner, is also buried there but I have not been able to identify her grave.

  • Letter to Mrs. J.A. Elliott

This is a letter to Mrs. J.A. Elliott (Arminda Hathaway) from Mrs. Hattie Nelson, dated Sept. 16, 1926. It is a curious letter, not because of the content but because it still exists.

  • Who are they?

There are no markings on this photo, but appears to be from the late 1940s to early 1950s.  It is likely a group of Elliotts or cousins of Elliotts, and potentially taken at the Elliott homestead in Sycamore.

    Does anyone recognize them?

Jabez Elliott, Sr. was the father of Jabez, Jr., and the great-grandfather of Bernard Elliott. He fought in the War of 1812 and several Indian wars.

  • Elliott(?) mother and children

This photo is a reprint or copy, and was found in Maxine Elliott Mottice's loose photos.  The color appears to be enhanced, if not added completely in the refinishing process.

  • Elliott(?) man

Here is another photo from among Maxine Elliott Mottice's loose photos.  It is an older photo -- it appears to be from the early 1900s.  One of the photos in the loose group was of Jabez Elliott Jr., Bernard's grandfather.  Might this photo be of one of his sons or other descendants?

  • Reip(?) family

This family photo was found in Maxine Elliott Mottice's loose photographs with no identification.  It is possible that this is the family of one of her maternal aunt's.  Goldi Reip had 3 sisters.  Might this be the family of one of them?

  • Elliott(?) woman

This photo was found among Maxine Elliott Mottice's older family photos, and probably dates before the 1930s.  The photo shown is a copy that was enlarged to 8'x10', which suggests that it was a valued photo.

  • Which Ira Reip family?

The caption on this photo from the Goldie Reip Photo Album reads, "Ira Reip Family."  But which Ira Reip family?
